Office: Board of Education

Objectives: Many people do not know this, but I grew up in Newtown, attended Newtown Public Schools and graduated from Newtown High School in 1983.  I feel fortunate to be able to raise my children here and have them attend Newtown schools.  It's a gift to be able to grow up in such a wonderful, caring community.  I am very excited to be running for the Board of Education again!

Did you know that Boards of Education get their marching orders from the State?  Laws are enacted at the state level and they must be implemented into policy by Boards of Education.  The main job of the Board of Education is to make sure board policies are created/updated and being followed by the Superintendent.  This is why experience is an important quality to have in order to be a productive member of the Board of Education.

My experience provides me with a unique perspective that is unmatched by any other candidate.  I have served on both the Board of Education and the Legislative Council since 2007.  Currently, I am a member of the Board of Education.  Previously, I have been a part of developing and enacting school policy, planning and building a school addition, budgeting for both the school and town, planning for school and town capital projects, supporting new/revised curriculum and working with multiple boards to help support Board of Education initiatives.

There are many challenges.  Here are just a few:
  • find the most qualified and appropriate Superintendent for our community to lead our schools
  • update the school strategic plan and board policies
  • facilitate the implementation of the Common Core State Standards
  • encourage curriculum and programs so all students can reach their highest level of learning
  • facilitate the building of the new Sandy Hook School
  • support our staff and students in their recovery from the tragic events of 12/14
  • find and evaluate the right and best solution for school security
  • establish trust in Board of Education spending

During my first term on the Board of Education, I supported and took part in a "Strategic Planning for Newtown Schools" initiative which included Newtowners from all walks of life. It was an important first step in trying to plan for the future and it was beneficial to include the input of a variety of townspeople.  It is time to update our strategic initiatives so that we are all "rowing in the same direction".  In addition to updating the plan, we need to tie our budgetary requirements to those strategic initiatives to ensure their success.

Vision, planning and solid financial policies will enable our school system to maintain services as well as move us forward.  Also, it is essential that the Board of Education maintain open communication with not only other Town boards but also the community as a whole.  Continued open communication and conversation will increase our chances for reaching consensus and arriving at the best solution; this will positively affect all residents.

The guiding question I always ask myself is "What is in the best interests of Newtown?"  I grew up in Newtown and I endeavor to leave it in a better place than I found it.
