Board of Education

Communication - I will bridge the gap between the Board of Education and the public.  I feel the Board of Education is not set up to allow people to share their opinions and concerns.  A few examples to increase communication are: quarterly Board of Education coffees, smaller roundtable discussions and two public participations at every Board of Education meeting.  Having two public participations will allow people to speak on any issue not just what is on the agenda.  Mainly, I want the community and the Board of Education to have a shared voice and common understanding of the major issues and concerns that are happening within our school system.  I will not defend, deflect or deny when people bring up concerns within our schools.  I will listen, research and answer the issues brought to me.

Fiscal Responsibility - The Board of Education must have a better understanding of where money is spent. In these tough economic times, we have to stretch the dollar and find more creative solutions for the best educational impact. I believe throwing money at a problem does not always fix the problem.  The district has a strategic plan; however, currently there is no sense of how our school budget addresses the strategic plan.  Our budgets and fiscal planning need to be aligned with the strategic plan in order to ensure we are spending the money in the right places.  Additionally, to truly understand where the money is going, the Board of Education needs to have access to more detailed fiscal reporting.  Our fiscal policies need to be reviewed, updated and followed.

Accountability - I promise as a Board of Education member to fully educate myself on the issues in our school system by doing the necessary research, asking the difficult questions and following through on the results of our decisions.   I believe better policies need to be in place to understand the impact of the decisions made by the Board of Education.  I also feel it is important to speak for all students, their parents, those the district employs and the community as a whole.
