Office: Legislative Council - 2nd District

Process oriented, fact driven discussions are the cornerstone of public debate. As a proven leader willing to ask difficult questions and tackle sensitive issues you can expect me to champion issues that others may find too difficult to take on.

I believe that when presented with the facts, the people of Newtown reach reasonable conclusions. My job as your representative is to be open to divergent perspectives, have respect for people’s differences of opinion and hear all of the voices in a debate. I have a sense of fair play and with your input will always seek a solution that provides for the common good of our community.

Some of my top priorities will be:

  • Continuing to encourage the conversation to address the issue of declining school enrollment.
  • Recognizing and addressing new needs as a result in the change in demographics that will significantly increase our senior population.
  • Presenting an acceptable budget to the voters in order to pass the next budget on the first vote.
  • Continue to lead the Legislative Council by facilitating difficult discussions making sure that all council members have enough information to make fact based decisions.

  • Serving in my 6th year as a representative of District 2 on the Legislative Council. After a difficult Ordinance Committee meeting regarding our Firearms Ordinance which I chaired, our First Selectman Pat Llodra provided the following feedback:  "What an extraordinary job you do in managing these very difficult issues.  You are well informed, have the right resources at hand, understand the process and how to move the issue forward and you are clear and direct with the public.  Your strength and intelligence in these situations is exactly what is needed."
  • Unanimously elected Chairman for the most recent term where I successfully led the effort that passed the last two budgets on the first vote. The first with a flat or no increase in taxes, and the most recent with a reduction in taxes.
  • Previously Vice Chairman of the council and Chair of the Ordinance Committee.
  • Volunteered as the President of the Sandy Hook School PTA for two years and Managed hundreds of volunteers, large complex budgets and widespread ideas and interests.
  • President of the Newtown Middle School PTA for one year.
  • Member of the PTA Advocacy team that was instrumental in seeing two budgets pass on the first vote. Our tireless efforts to communicate the facts to our parents, allowing them to make fully informed decisions were a major win for all.
  • Sandy Hook School Library Clerk 2006 - present. Responsibilities include cataloging books, ensuring system allows children easy access to what they want to read. Working with children on book selections as well as supporting the Library Media Specialist as required.
