Jeff Capeci has served as Newtown’s First Selectman since 2023, bringing more than 20 years of public service and a strong commitment to responsive, transparent local government. Over the course of his career, he has built deep institutional knowledge through ten years on the Legislative Council—six as chair—six years on the Board of Selectmen, and leadership of two Charter Revision Commissions, including the commission that successfully separated town and school budgets on the referendum ballot to improve clarity and accountability for voters.
As First Selectman, Jeff has prioritized fiscal discipline, infrastructure renewal, economic vitality, and open communication with residents. His first municipal budget in 2024 reduced a proposed 6% increase to just 2.8% through cost-saving measures and responsible use of surplus funds. In 2025, voters approved his $141 million combined town and school budget, including five major infrastructure projects, with broad support. Jeff has also overseen emergency response efforts, including managing recovery from the August 2024 storm that severely damaged more than 36 areas across town.
Under his leadership, Newtown has advanced the redevelopment of the Fairfield Hills campus by securing historic designation, unlocking federal tax credits and grants, and partnering with WinnDevelopment to create 169 units of housing in Kent and Shelton Houses. He also secured a $610,000 state grant to preserve historic duplexes on the campus, protecting their structural integrity and preparing them for future reuse.
Jeff’s leadership style is grounded in accessibility and community connection. He maintains an open-door policy and regularly engages with residents through initiatives like “Java with Jeff” at the Senior Center, as well as frequent visits to community events and local businesses.
Looking ahead, Jeff remains focused on responsible budget stewardship, redevelopment opportunities including blighted properties such as the Batchelder site, and continued investment in town infrastructure. With his collaborative approach and steady leadership, he is dedicated to preserving Newtown’s historic character while building a vibrant, resilient community for generations to come.
