Planning and Zoning
Hello, my name is Roy Meadows, and I am running for re-election to the Planning and Zoning Board, a position which I have been in since 2019. I have resided in Newtown since 1989 with my partner, Jane Brymer. I have previously lived in West Virginia and Tennessee.
As Planning and Zoning Commissioner, I will strive to balance the community's needs with the developer's desires while perserving the New England character of Newtown. Projects should be evaluated against Newtown's Plan of Conservation and Development, and we must always assess the impact of a project/ development on our traffic situation in Newtown. Land use issues must be given a fair and complete public hearing with all opinions taken into consideration. The land use decisions must cope with the impact on our community that has been created by the high housing density permitted under Connecticut's Affordable Housing Regulations.
If re-elected, I will be a strong advocate for keeping planning zoning matters a local decision without interference from the State. I am committed to protecting our town's character whle considering informed growth initiatives. Traffic on our roads in Newtown is a recongnized issue and will be carefully evaluated for each new development.
Professionally, I was an engineer for Union Carbide Corpration with a BSChE from the University of Tennessee and a MSChE from West Virginia University. I worked for Union Carbide doing process design work and international licensing for 33 years. In my retirement, I do handyman work in the Newtown area. This experience gives me insights into technical issues, practical matters, and codes, as well as background in leagal proceedings.
In summary, I pledge to visit the property and review the documentation for each Application so that I can make an informed contribution for each decision. Thank you for considering me again as a Commissioner for Planning and Zoning.
